This is for logging the SA State survey markers.
They are normally a small bronze disc with a serial number. But Some do not have a serial number on them. They can be found in the most surprising places, even places such as bridges, in the middle of footpaths, even on the side of monuments.
To log the find:
1. You need to post a picture of the marker with a GPS Unit beside it.
2. Please include co-ords
3. Write a description of where the marker is located.
4. And just for fun, give your survey marker a terrain rating to let us all know how hard it was for you to reach it.

Couldn't resist logging this survey mark - the granddaddy of them all in SA! This is in victoria square in the centre of the city and is the mark that all coordinates are determined from. Its probably the biggest survey plate you'll find in SA too - making it a pretty easy find!

Before I knew about this cache, I never realised what I was walking over.
I've walked over this survey mark right in the middle of the Adelaide CBD almost every time I have walked from the bus stop to work - and never noticed it! Interesting smaller version of the usual street corner SA survey mark, with a 1/1 rating. (apologies for the blurry photo, I made it a quick pic since I was in the middle of commuter foot traffic!)

This turned out to be a very exciting survey find on an otherwise ordinary street corner. Placing my GPS on the ground, I took the picture and half a second later, and half a metre from my GPS, a car ran a stop light resulting in a fender bender, a flying plastic bumper that just missed me, a car nearly running over my GPS, and me giving my contact details as a witness to two drivers who were more busy arguing with each other than wondering why I was photographing the pavement in the first place!
But the most important thing - no one was physically hurt, neither of the drivers, me, or the GPS!

Would have never found this mark if it wasn't for the warning poles - it was covered under about 5cm of grass and mud! Cleaned it out as best we could. A long climb up to this one, so about a terrain of 3 on this one.

Walking down the Carrick Hill Track I luckily noticed this warning pole and sure enough, a shuffle through the wet grass revealed another survey mark. This one is near McGelligot's Quarry carpark.

Came across this survey mark quite unexpectedly on the way to a cache, up a hill. There seems to be a coin lodged in the cement in the corner - perhaps from the year it was placed? The terrain rating for this one would have to be about 2.5 stars.

When someone decided to slash our car tyres lastnight we thought caching would be out of the weekend, but then decided on a walk around the neighbourhood to see what locationless caches we could get.

This survey marker is on a footpath right near a house that always seems to have a huge flock of pigeons on its roof. None of the other houses nearby seem to have them. I discovered the reason why when locating this marker this morning - the owner scatters bread out on the footpath in the mornings!

With Firesafe's amazing URL resource, and the fact that I'm home sick but supposed to be taking a walk every day as part of my rehabilitation, I decided to see how many survey marks I could find close to home on a morning walk. Today I walked 5.3km and found 16, and forgive me for logging all of them but I found it quite interesting. Apart from this one, which is an odd format I've never seen before, all of the suburban survey marks near me had no serial numbers visible on them. Many were not quite accurately represented on the map either. And I don't get why some have few diamonds, and some many. Doing something like this really made a morning neighbourhood walk interesting and boy, are there a lot of metal plates on the ground that you don't notice usually.
For all my finds, I'd rate them 1 terrain, 1 difficulty. It seems there's practically one on every street corner. I'm keen to get out and find a few more of the interesting ones.

This is at Mosquito Hill, between Goolwa and Mount Compass. I live 1.5km away (as the kookaburra flies).

I was shocked to find there was no cache for SA State Survey Marks, so once I got a reliable internet connection I emailed Tronador for permission to place this cache. He very quickly replied in the affirmative, but I was a bit slow in getting "a round tuit".
It would be rude for me to claim the First To Find, so this will remain a note until someone finds another mark, and then I'll change the date and change it to a find.
