Our 1st GCA hide, and the 1st webcam Cache in Ballarat.

The camera rotates around the sites listed below, so you will not have to wait here for any more than 30 mins for the camera to come back to this spot. There is parking nearby.

The co-ordinates will take you to a statue of Queen Victoria , if you look up and across the street you will see the sphere that the camera is housed in.

The camera is viewable at www.ballarat.vic.gov.au/cityview

It stays on each site for approx 1 minute before moving on to the next one.

The order of movement is below, and the ones followed by an asterisk are sites that will give you a clear place to to be seen. The best spots are at the waypoint given, or at the front of "Her Majesty's" around the corner in Lydiard St.

This list will be handy for whoever is sitting in front of the computer to take your picture, so they can call you when the camera is a couple of moves away.

If you want, you can hold up your GPS to prove it is you, or put a sign on the ground with the GCA logo or your Username.

Please attach your picture to the log of your visit.

We will also accept pics from any of the asterisked sites. If you are short of time and have missed your photo opportunity, one of these spots will be OK, but harder to get a clearer image.
If you watch the webcam before you attempt this, you will know where you will have to stand.

THE SITES
Queen Victoria Square *
Armstrong Street Nth
St Andrews Cathedral
Ballarat Base Hospital
St John Of God Hospital
Sturt St West
Cnr Sturt & Doveton *
Ballarat Train Station
Ballarat East
Eureka Centre
Mt Buninyong
Cnr Dana & Lydiard Streets
Cnr Sturt & Lydiard *
Bridge Mall *
Old Post Office
Alfred Square
Craigs Royal Hotel
Her Majesty's Theatre *
THE CAMERA THEN REPEATS THIS SEQUENCE

Disclamers:
We do not own or control this webcam.
We do not get any warning when this camera is down for maintenance and/or repair.
If the webcam is not working, for any reason, a photo taken of you at the statue with your GPS is acceptable.

Don't attempt at night. There is a floodlight that points upwards and the bright light flares the webcam's view of Queen Victoria Square at night.

The camera was working when this cache was submitted
Parked close-by and walked to the statue, checked the webcam on my iPhone and it's still down. The council were doing some work nearby so it may be on the way back? Not sure, so I got a pic to prove I was there. Thanks.

With the webcam still off-line, we stood in front of Her Majesty and had J take a quick snap of us.
As per advice from the cache owner, this should suffice for a find.
Thanks 2Dudez for this cache today. We've been longingly looking this one each time we came to Ballarat and this looks like our final chance to snaffle it.</text>

<text>I spotted this one on Sunday, but it was too late to head into town. And until today I have not been home until after dark. Not that getting home after dark is all that hard at this time of year. I think the sun rises about 10 and sets about 4.

I wanted to take the geoferret with me, but thought the FTF would only wait for so long, so today instead of lunch I had cache.

I don’t stand out too well. I should really have been wearing bright orange safety gear to make me stand out. I’m even waving! Happily I could see the camera pointing at me, because there were a few people looking at me whilst I stood in the middle of Sturt Street.

Thanks 2Dudez.

I didn't hold much faith in finding this one intact as it;s very close to housing nowadays, but as we approached the hill there it was.
A few broken bottles and various flotsam and jetsam around the base, but the TP is there, nice and black.
A interesting little area behind the houses, but alas no view and the trees are quite tall and block the view. I suppose this makes the TP useless as originally intended, but it's there and a nice easy find.

A very nice drive up the mountain and at the top we parked and spotted the TP only a few meters away from the carpark.
An easy drive by if there ever was one.
Alas, no view as the trees are quick thick and tall up here, but it's a nice location to visit, especially in spring when the low ground flowers are out and about.

Hidden around 60km from the caughtatwork place of residence Jess and I have been out past this way a number of times over the last year as Jess is taking driving lessons in preparation for her driving licence.

We have three routes that we take, either head to Ballarat, Bendigo or Geelong, that give her a good chance to drive through the suburban area out to a freeway, then an hour or so of freeway driving before heading back into the burbs for some caching.

Having been up and down this road quite a few times lately we felt that it was time there was another cache, not quite along the freeway, but just enough to get off the freeway and have a short moment of relaxation from the tension of trying not to crash into anything that moves, or is, indeed, stationary. A moment is all you should need to park, find the cache and return, it's that easy.

This cache won't pose too many problems in being found. It's a 50 calibre ammo can painted to match the surroundings and contains a 3 litre sistema container inside for added waterproofness. Of course the cache containers the usual swaps, log book and pen.

Lane Cove was hidden on 18-May-2000, so 18-May-2010 will see the 10th anniversary of geocaching in Australia. This cache was placed as part of the GCA celebration for the 10th anniversary of caching in Australia.

I hope you enjoy the little twokay detour from your main jaunt up and down the Western Highway.

<text>0804 and our first real frost of this winter as we drove to a rogaine at Lal Lal, so no detour necessary. Not used to driving up to a cache. While A+ was slowing down I was busy on the GPRs zooming in and in and ... and suddenly we were 100m past. On alighting, the detritus of travellers quickly pushed me to the precise spot.

Even at this early hour cars were humming by but occupants probably presumed I was 'squatting' as I sat inspecting the copious contents and completing the log. Found a pair of polypropylene gloves close to the cache so if either of the only two prior visitors left them, send me an e-mail. Coincidentally, that evening we picked up A+'s sunnies from Ben who had found them at Go With the Flow moons ago. What goes around, comes around. TNLN. Thanks c@w and Jess.</text>

<text>*FTF* at 11:00am.

The two year old daughter and I decided to make this our "Round up a few unfound 10 Year Anniversary caches" day. So, with the weather on our side and the toys packed we headed out. This was the first of a few we found. <img src="http://ideology.geocaching.com.au/pics/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Very Happy" title="Very Happy" />
At first at GZ I couldn't work out why everyone who passed was slowing down but then twigged that we looked like a parked speed camera car. There must be a lot of guilty consciences out there! <img src="http://ideology.geocaching.com.au/pics/smilies/icon_razz.gif" alt="Razz" title="Razz" />
The contents of the cache inspected and returned (well mostly. Ever tried to separate a 2yo from a toy she doesn't want to let go 8( we moved on to see what else awaited us for the day.

Took: Winners medal (after extensive negotiations). Left: Pathtag.

Thanks caughtatwork, we always have fun at your well stocked and expansive caches. This was no exception.</text>

You won't be in a position to see these geological features from GZ as you are in a position to look over the gorge towards the Pentland Hills in the distance. If you look carefully you will see cars on the Western / Ballarat Freeway.

Carparking for this cache is excellent, only some 100m or so from GZ. When you park you will see which way your GPS is pointing. There an easy access track to the area so look for the access point marked by two pine poles. Otherwise feel free to struggle up the very steep embankment.

I was caching my way west towards Ballan after attending an event earlier in the day - but the weather was starting to turn a bit nasty, so I decided to skip a couple of the higher terrain caches around here, as I didn't want to get too far from the car without some good weatherproofing at hand. This cache, luckily, was less than 100m from a parking spot and I was able to quickly scuttle up the hill, find and log it and get back before I got too wet. It was another excellent offer by c@w and made me wish I was into swapping! The nearby rail line must offer some interesting views along here - I'd like to check it out sometime too.

This cache has us seeing more of the area than was necessary having decided that the cache was on the other side of the train tracks. We parked at an obvious spot and saw the necessary items mentioned in the clue so up the trail we went. Once at the top of the hill we were concerned that we were on the side of the rail line, we though it did not seem right so walked all the way back down again before relocating to the correct side of the bridge. Tried the direct straight up approach and was rewarded with finding the cache where there was some great views then took the longer way back down.

After leaving the nearby event at Merrimu Reservoir, I was doing some caching further west and the lure of two caches at the one spot was too much to resist - especially as I was able to make them into a drive-by after coming up the nicely muddy track from the open gate below. I would have liked it if the weather had been a bit more friendly while I was there, but it didn't stop me from taking in the expansive views and, after logging the GC cache, I whipped out the camera to get this one too.

After finding the nearby GC cache today I couldn't miss the opportunity to catch this TP. It seems that it wasn't in the database so I captured the co-ords and took the pictures and when I got home it went in straight away.
I think I'll claim FTF on this cache.
You get some great views from up here and it's more that worth the visit as I drove up from the entry point which makes this an easy driveby 1/1 cache.

I have decided to keep this game piece moving, and as such, have changed the goals for this cache.

I would like this cache to visit the parts of australia I have not yet been to.

Namely, Northern Territory, Northern Queensland, Tasmania, and Western Australia (and any of the beautiful places inbetween to get there, that I have only seen on telly and in pictures).

What you are looking for is a 200mL sistema container painted black. It does have a magnet (hopefully it sticks, if I get a chance to grab it again - I'll adhere it better), but doesn't need to be used when re-hiding.

I took the back way into the cache location and parked at the gas station as advised. A short walk through the whistling wind (and boy was it cold) down to GZ.
With a terrain 1 I was looking for something a little easier, but nevertheless I found the cache. Maybe up the terrain rating to a 2 which would give an indication of how close to the edge you need to be.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks g_ordo for this cache highlighting this area and a great view. No birds today, I think they were all at home (well, they should be if they were clever).

What an interesting view. I had no idea this place existed. The terrain 1 had me at e wrong elevation for a while but eventually worked out it should be up there. That might make it a terrain 2. Still and easy find once I got there.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks g_ordo for this cache, and a wonderful cache inside an ammo can, and for hiding one for the 10th anniversary.

Hi Janaliel. After meeting you at Flash Mob IV where you said you;d hidden a GCA cache down this way I felt I had to find it when I was next down here.
Well, I wasn't exactly down here, I was over near Portarlington, but on the way home a quick bypass on the bypass brought me to the cache location.
A great bridge showing some of the very skilled work that I'm sure we have lost over the years. A nice quick find of the cache as well.
As I had headed here specifically to find the GCA cache I didn't leave enough time to find the GC cache nearby so I'll need to come back again one day. Maybe if you place another GCA cache I'll come and find that one too.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks Janaliel for this cache experience today. With the Geelong bypass so close, this is a much easier area to get to than in the olden days.

I came to this location thinking these may still be here but only found 1 out of 5. As I was unhappy with the geo-trails I was leaving through this nice park as I searched, I decided to replace the caches at the posted co-ords. The owner of the series doesn't seem to be around anymore and the caches haven't been found in over two years. This will make it easy for others to find these after today. I have used simple eclipse tins which is all I had on me at the time. The series isn't great and the replacements probably won't last very long but these should be easy to find if anyone wants to increase their GCA stats. The real highlight of this park is the old mill across the river and Bushfire's awesome GC.com cache.

Found by Roma and Max.
Although the posted co-ordinates did prove to be accurate it took us longer than it should have to find this container.
However when found we discovered water had entered this much more substantial container.
The nearby river level had obviously risen after recent heavy rain and partially intruded into the container niche.
We dried out all the items and although the log book is slightly damp it is still quite serviceable, we swapped a Mondo Figurine for a Pirate Magnet and replaced all items in 2 zip lock bags.
We also took the liberty to replace the container about 1m nearer to the path, still well within the published co-ordinates range, but maybe not yet entirely out of high water level reach!
Thanks again finchfella for placing this cache.

Another terrain 1 cache that shouldn't be. A terrain 2 or so rating on this cache would be more appropriate. It would be impossible to get to the cache (or even the general cache area) with a wheelchair which is what a terrain 1 should be indicating.
The difficulty wasn't too far off, but that's only because I lucked out on finding it after spotting something not quite right.
The cache was very difficult to retrieve as it was slipping further and further under, so when I rehid it, I stuffed something else down first which may relieve the situation for future hiders.
Again, this type of container is prone to leaks and the log book should be in a ziplock back along with a stash note to give an indication of what this thing is doing here.
The views across to the falls where glorious and very much worth the effort to come down here from Melbourne today.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks finchfella for this cache. There is some feedback in my logs today. Nothing too serious, but a little more attention to the terrain / difficulty ratings and maybe a few more caches under your belt to determine accurate co-ordinates wouldn't go astray.
Thanks for this series, of which I am yet to collect 1, so I will return.

Whoops! This is definately not a terrain 1. There is no way a wheelchair could get up to that access point.
I was initially looking for the cache along the path in line with a terrain 1 and difficulty 1, but after 10 or so minutes, I gave up on that idea and set wandering in larger and larger circles.
The GPSr was pointing me in both directions from the track so I wasn't sure exactly where to go and I can across the cache only because I saw the blue lid rather than any seeking skills.
I recommend that the terrain rating be changed to a 2 and maybe the difficulty to a 1.5 or 2 as well as the cache could be in any on various nook and crannies in the rocks.
I'm not sure the cache will survive the temperature changes over the summer and is likely to let in moisture over time. The log book should probably be placed in a ziplock bag and a stash note should be included as well.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks finchfella. This experience wasn't quite as nice as the others in finding the cache, but the area where the cache is hidden is quite pleasant and so quite enjoyable.

What a nice area for a cache. I walked down from the top carpark so I was able to take in the general area on the way down. It's quite a pleasant walk.
The cache was an easy find as the method of hiding is a complete giveaway. I won't be surprised if this gets muggled given where it's hidden, the way it's hidden and the proximity to the path.
The cache container is completely unsuitable as a cache as the plastic is very thing and water will get in, even just through it's somewhat protected from the rain. As the temperature changes over night and during the day, this container is going to crack up.
It would be worth putting the log book into a ziplock bag to protect it from the elements and there should also be a stash note which tells muggles what to do should they find it.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks finchfella for a nice easy cache in a nice area.

An interesting location for the first of 4 GCA caches today.
I drove down from Melbourne just to get these caches, so I was pleased with the general area in which they were located. Very pleasant.
This cache was a little bit of a surpsrise as I was initially looking for a small cache, but the obvious location was only big enough for a micro.
I didn't really check the co-ords as the most obvious place wasthe first place I checked.
A quick look and there was the cache. A micro indeed. A change should be made to reflect the correct cache size.
The terrain was probably a 1.5 more than a 1 but someone dedicated could consider this suitable for wheelchair access.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks finchfella for this cache in a nice area.

Have had a chat to the owner who is teaching students on how to use a GPS, and this is a good idea. Three out of the top nine hiders in Victoria 2007 with 79 hides between them had offered to help these guys but they went ahead and put the six GCA caches within 160m of a GC cache!!! For some reason this cache wasn't in my GPS or PDA so I called Facitman for the co-ords. It was a relatively simple find in the end after walking all the way up and down the wall a couple of times.
I certainly wasn't going to climb it though. I wouldn't have gotten more than a couple of feet off the ground I expect.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks crashmancory for this cache experience today.
An interesting bluestone wall in the middle of nowhere. It would be interesting if you could dig up some history on the wall and add it to the cache page. Would make for a much more interesting read.

The first cache of the day and as I was coming down this way, it had to be the GCA cache. Wheeeeeeeee!
An interesting location. I have been here before to find Common Ground but I don't remember this item being here. Although it was some years ago so maybe I just forgot.
I certainly didn't partake of the Yucky Spring as it certainly looked yucky. Probably tastes like a mineral spring though. Oh, yeah, yucky.
The cache was found easily enough, but not before coming upon another GC cache only a few meters away. Whoops.
Watch out for logs in the log books that get mistaken for each other.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks Crash and Lilo for this cache today. Seems like we have swapped log this week. Thanks also for supporting GCA. I really appreciate GCA caches and this was on my must do list when I saw it come up during the week.

<text>Second to find. Don't seem to be able to crack a FTF but maybe I will get there some day. Nice big cache in a nice quiet spot. My son and some boys from our court come fishing just near here, so I knew the area but had not been to the cache site before. TFTC</text>

<text>Came home this afternoon and while looking through the GCA website discovered bushfire's latest cache was hidden today. A quick bit of map and Google Earth research and off I went.
Found it at 1610 today and thrilled to be FTF. Interesting site. Also warrants the "Peaceful Spot" title. Like to know its history. Thanks for the footy and the scratchie. Sadly there are no winnings to share.</text>
